Picking, not predicting
Most astrology reads a moment that has already passed - your birth. Muhurta works the other way. It picks a moment for something that has not happened yet. The idea is simple: start well, and the whole work carries that quality. A wedding, a griha pravesh, the first day of a shop - each one traditionally starts under a sky chosen for it.
The five parts of a day
Muhurta reads a day through the panchang. The word means "five parts". Together they describe how any moment feels:
- TithiLunar day - the Moon's phase
- VaraWeekday - each one has a graha
- NakshatraThe Moon's nakshatra that day
- YogaSun and Moon together, 27 in all
- KaranaHalf a tithi - the small detail
Times people pick
- Vivaha - marriage. This is the most careful muhurta. It weighs both charts and the sky.
- Griha pravesh - walking into a new home for the first time.
- Vyapara - opening a shop, signing a deal, starting something.
- Yatra - starting an important journey.
- Namakarana - a baby's naming day. It often follows the janma nakshatra.
Times to avoid
Every day also has some hours that are set aside. The best known is Rahu kaal. It is about 90 minutes long and it moves with the day of the week. Families simply plan around it. Take these the way the tradition does: good manners with time, not a threat.
