Most astrology reads a moment that already happened - your birth. Muhurta works the other way: it chooses a moment for something that hasn't happened yet, so the beginning carries the qualities you want the whole endeavour to have. A marriage, a griha pravesh, a first day of business - each traditionally starts under a sky selected for it.
The five limbs of a day
Muhurta reads the day through the panchang - literally "five limbs". Together they describe the texture of any given moment:
- TithiLunar day - the Moon's phase angle
- VaraWeekday - each ruled by a graha
- NakshatraThe Moon's mansion that day
- YogaSun-Moon combination, 27 in all
- KaranaHalf a tithi - the fine grain
Moments people elect
- Vivaha - marriage; the most elaborate muhurta, weighing both charts and the sky.
- Griha pravesh - entering a new home for the first time.
- Vyapara - opening a business, signing, launching.
- Yatra - beginning an important journey.
- Namakarana - a child's naming ceremony, often guided by the janma nakshatra.
Windows to avoid
Each day also carries stretches traditionally set aside - Rahu kaal being the best known, a roughly 90-minute window that shifts with the weekday. Families often simply schedule around it. Treat these as the tradition does: rhythm and etiquette with time, not threats.
