The photograph
Take your date, time, and place of birth, and you can reconstruct exactly where every graha stood in the sky. That snapshot, drawn as a chart, is your kundli (or janma kundli). It doesn't change - what changes is the sky moving over it, which is where daily readings and dashas come from.
The lagna - your hinge
The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It moves through all twelve signs every day - which is why birth time matters so much. The lagna becomes your first house, and every other house counts around from it. Same planets, different lagna: a very different life story.
The North Indian layout
In the diamond-style chart common across North India, the top-centre diamond is always house 1 - the lagna - and the houses count anti-clockwise. Signs move; houses stay put.
South Indian charts fix the signs instead and let the lagna move. Same sky, two notations.
