Dashas - the chapters of a life

Vedic astrology's most distinctive idea: your chart doesn't just describe you, it unfolds on a schedule. Meet the Vimshottari dasha.

A clock, not a verdict

A dasha is a planetary period - a stretch of years in which one graha sets the tone of your life. The most widely used system, Vimshottari, arranges all nine grahas into a 120-year cycle. Where your cycle begins depends on your janma nakshatra, so no two people walk the sequence the same way.

Read gently, a dasha isn't a prophecy. It's a theme - what this stretch of life keeps asking you to learn.

The 120-year Vimshottari cycle

  • Ketu7y
  • Venus ♀20y
  • Sun ☉6y
  • Moon ☽10y
  • Mars ♂7y
  • Rahu18y
  • Jupiter ♃16y
  • Saturn ♄19y
  • Mercury ☿17y

Periods within periods

Each mahadasha (major period) divides into nine antardashas (sub-periods) that follow the same planetary order, scaled down. A 20-year Venus mahadasha, for instance, opens with a Venus-Venus stretch, then Venus-Sun, Venus-Moon, and so on. Traditional readings go a level deeper still - but mahadasha and antardasha carry most of the story.

That's why the same years can feel so different from the ones before: the sub-period changed, and with it, the flavour of the theme.

How to read yours

Knowing "I'm in Saturn mahadasha" means little on its own. What matters is how Saturn sits in your chart - which houses it rules, where it's placed, what it aspects. A well-placed Saturn period often brings the most solid years of a life: slow, structural, quietly rewarding.
